Habits for When Creativity is Running Low!

Oh to be creative, it’s a gift. It’s needed in jobs like Staging and Design, Architecture, Writing and useful in all professions and throughout our educational years. When a person or a group is able to think creatively the outcome is evident, it’s quite simply, better. However, using or finding creativity is not always that effortless because unfortunately it’s not a light switch most people can just turn on when needed. It’s easy to feel blocked.  We can get distracted, unmotivated, and lack the precise inspiration to capture that lightening in a bottle.   But what if you need to be creative for a specific project or in a moment and you feel uninspired? I personally operate at my best late at night while rewarded with sugary treats. For example it is currently 11:15pm and I’m drinking a large Arnold Parmer while typing in the dark.  Yet my night owl, sugar addict ways are not helpful in a meeting or during an assignment. No worries, I have other tricks up my savvy sleeve.

Habit #1: Change of Scenery (Scroll)

I love nature. I noticed that whenever I was stressed or overwhelmed I always felt better in places like the Adirondack Mountains or out on a beautiful lake. It is peaceful and freeing to be outdoors, everything seems lighter. We can create that same freedom for ourselves every day.  If you’re stuck and unable to focus you can take a walk outside or if time doesn’t allow it, then just move around. When you sit still and look at the same backdrop you will embody that stale emotion and it will be apparent in your work. Get up, move your hips, grab water or take a minute to look at something new. Any sort of scenery change will train your mind to gain new momentum.   If you are in a location different from an office, like Staging a home, do whatever is feasible to acquire a new perspective. You can grab a coffee, sit in the sun, or take a two-minute dance break. When we decide to put effort into apprehending inspiration it will flow into our masterpiece.

Habit # 2: Surround Yourself with Beauty (Scroll)

When you are around pretty things, you will create pretty things. This past Christmas I decorated my entire house based off of one gold, glittery feather tree ornament. I wandered around the store not knowing which decorations would look best and then I saw that feather and it all fell into place. I worked everything else around that one feather because I loved it and it was that easy. If you want to be more inventive, create a space filled with things that encourage you and make you happy when you look at them. It could be a gold stapler, a childhood picture, a motivational quote, a daily mantra or a fake Academy Award; it will be different for each person.  Always seek beauty and lean towards joy.

Habit #3: Cold Showers (Hmm…)

I know exactly what you were thinking when you read number 3 because it’s what I used to think as well. “I can’t take cold showers, not going to happen!” I used to be very serious about my love for hot showers and if you told me to start taking cold showers I would have called you insane. Then I read all the benefits of taking cold showers and decided it would be worth a try. The article explained that it was good for my immune system, improves circulation, keeps skin and hair healthier, and lastly increases energy and well-being.   I began my 30day cold shower challenge on Leap Day of 2016 since it is already an odd day and this was an odd mission.  The first few days were rough. I screamed and cringed like a baby.  Though, now I greatly appreciate my morning routine. I do feel more focused and alert and that leads to more creativity.  The habit of taking a cold shower in the morning is such a simple action yet the benefits can impact your whole day. Plus your skin will look flawless so automatically you are winning!

3 Staging Tips that make a healthy, happier home!

When you see a Staged home it is beautiful and perfect and usually not decorated for living. The reason for this is because when Stagers transform a space, the main goal is to showcase the home for sale—not for personal style or taste. Stagers want homebuyers to walk freely from room to room and feel invited. Each aspect of the Stage is to highlight the special details of the home and remove buyer’s questions. However, there are some Staging techniques that can help  inspire your home decor and way of living, for the better!

In all Staged homes the bed in the master bedroom is always made and looks grand. There are fluffy pillows and the sheets are perfectly folded and neat. Beyond just the look of a made bed, the act of making your bed is an excellent habit. Gretchen Rubin author of  “The Happiness Project” found that making your bed is one of the easiest things you can do to be happier. It sounds simple enough but numerous studies show that starting your day with a productive habit leads off a chain-reaction for other positive habits. So go ahead and buy those fancy sheets and oversized pillows and make your bedroom your sleeping sanctuary. After all, there’s scientific proof to back you up—plus you deserve it!

#2~BOOKS, BOOKS and MORE BOOKS! (Scroll)

Books are a great tool for Stagers. We use cookbooks in the kitchen, novels for the study, and throughout the entire home. Books are a ultimate source of inspiration. If you don’t have time to sit and cuddle-up to finish a book, sometimes just a sentence can motivate you! I love having influential books to look at and glance at and re-read. Creating an area in your home to inspire creativity and encouragement is a excellent way to promote productivity.


Clutter is the enemy of a Stager. We want all Staged homes to be clutter-free and clean. In a vacant home that is an easy task for the obvious reason that no one lives there. Yet, when you live in your home you need those things that create clutter. We have clothes and accessories and bills and everyday “stuff.” For some people the thought of decluttering and cleaning out their belongings is overwhelming. The key is to start small. You don’t have to worry about emptying out every kitchen drawer in one day. Rather, just do one drawer every Saturday until you finish. Your clothes can also be tricky because you may feel like you will need something as soon as you give it away. However, instead of stressing out, the next time you buy something new try to get rid of something old that you haven’t recently worn. This habit makes it easier to part with things and less of a cumbersome task. When you live with less it gives you more of an opportunity to use only the items that you love, and that is always beneficial.

The REAL cost of Home Staging

We receive many Quick Stage Quotes and inquiries about the various aspects of Home Staging. One of which, pertains to the real cost of Home Staging. Although a large percentage of our quotes result in a new client on their way to selling their home and doing business with us—Not all do. You may ask “why?” It usually comes down to the perceived cost. Whether people have spent too much on their rehab, or  just decreased their listing price, Staging is rarely considered in the initial planning budget.


What most people don’t realize is that with Staging, the need to decrease list price is statistically less likely than if you leave the home vacant. You can also work some of the Staging fees into your list price if you want, but many sellers do not expect to get their full list price. Many agents over price the home initially with an expectation of having to decrease the listing price at least once. With Home Staging our goal is to position a home on the market so that our clients will (and most often do) get full asking price or more. The key is to see Staging as an investment in the home, rather than a cost to you. The real cost to you as a seller is decreasing your list price by $5000, $10,000, $15,000 or maybe more, when you could invest much less than that into Staging and receive your full list price.
